Student Movers in Waterloo
A student move is not a small house move. It is a different job with its own calendar, its own buildings and its own way of going wrong.
Waterloo has two universities within a few blocks of each other and tens of thousands of students who move on a schedule the rest of the city does not. The University of Waterloo's co-op system turns terms over every four months, so a fair share of the student population moves in January, May and September rather than only in the fall. Laurier adds a big September wave. The buildings are a mix: purpose-built towers on Columbia Street, Lester Street, King Street North and University Avenue, older walk-ups and converted houses in Northdale, and rental houses in the streets between the campuses and uptown.
Why the crew matters more for a student move
The load is usually small: a bed, a desk, a dresser, a chair, a mini fridge, a bike, clothes and ten to twenty boxes. What is hard is everything around the load. Three roommates leaving as three new ones arrive through one door. A tower with one service elevator and forty units turning over the same weekend. A walk-up with three flights and a landing that a queen box spring will not turn on. A loading zone that is really just the curb on Lester with a bylaw officer walking it. An old lease that ends on the 31st and a new one that starts on the 1st, with a night in between.
The buildings, and what they require
- Purpose-built student towers. Most require an elevator booking. Some have a move-in schedule in late August where each floor gets a window. Ask your building for its moving policy and send it with your enquiry; the crew will work to it.
- Northdale walk-ups and converted houses. No elevator, narrow stairs, sometimes a basement unit with a low door. Everything is carried. Crew size is what makes these fast.
- Rental houses. Five or six bedrooms, a shared kitchen, and usually the easiest access of the three because the truck can use the driveway.
Sharing a truck with roommates
When two or three people are moving from the same unit to units within a few blocks, one truck and one crew doing two or three drops in sequence is usually the cheapest way to do it. Each person's things are loaded and tagged separately. It only works when everyone is packed and ready at the same time, so agree on that first. If one roommate is going to Kitchener and another to a tower on Columbia, say so; the route gets planned around it.
Booking for the end of August
The last week of August and the first two days of September are the busiest moving days in Waterloo Region. Crews, trucks and elevator slots run out. If your lease starts September 1, book the move as early as you can, and if you have any flexibility, a move on August 28 or September 3 is easier and often cheaper than the 31st or the 1st. January and May turnovers are busy but less extreme.
Parents, distance and the drive in
A lot of student moves start in a family home in Mississauga, Oakville, London or Hamilton and end in a Waterloo tower. The crew can load at the family house and deliver to the residence or apartment in one day; Highway 401 and Highway 7/8 make that a normal run. Leases, keys and the gap night
Not every landlord releases keys on the morning of the first. If your old lease and new lease do not overlap, plan for it: a friend's place for the boxes, a family car for the essentials, or a move timed for when the new keys are actually in hand. The mover does not provide storage, so a gap has to be solved before moving day. Questions about deposits, key release and lease end dates are for the Landlord and Tenant Board, not the crew.
What is not included
Hauling away the futon nobody wants, the broken desk chair and the bags of leftover stuff is junk removal, a different service. The Region has rules about what can go to the curb and when; check the Region of Waterloo before leaving anything outside. Storage over a co-op term is not something the mover provides.
