Where can a moving truck park in Waterloo? Street rules, overnight limits and snow events
On moving day, where the truck parks decides how far every box travels. Waterloo's parking rules are straightforward, but a few of them catch people out, especially overnight and in winter.

The basic street rules
On Waterloo streets, you can park for up to three hours unless signs say otherwise. That is enough for loading a one-bedroom apartment or a student room, but a full house in Laurelwood or Columbia Forest can take longer, so check the signs where the truck will sit and plan to use the driveway where possible.
Other City of Waterloo rules that matter for a truck:
- Driveways: no parking in front of or within 1.5 metres of a driveway, including a neighbour's.
- Hydrants: no parking within 3 metres of a fire hydrant.
- Intersections: keep 9 metres from an intersecting road.
- Boulevards: no parking on or overhanging the boulevard, even where it is paved as part of your driveway.
The boulevard rule is the one moving trucks break most often. A long truck backed into a short driveway can overhang the boulevard or block the sidewalk. Measure the driveway and tell the mover how long it is.
Overnight: the 2:30 to 6 a.m. rule
Street parking is not allowed in Waterloo between 2:30 and 6 a.m. unless the vehicle is registered through the City's overnight parking program. Residents can register up to 15 times a year, and each night has to be registered separately; the app stops accepting registrations at 2:15 a.m.
This matters for a two-day move, a rental truck picked up the night before, or friends' cars left on the street while they help. If a loaded truck has to sit overnight, keep it in a driveway if you can, or register it for that night.
Snow events override everything
When the City declares a snow event, no one can park on any city street or lot, even with overnight registration, and vehicles can be ticketed or towed. For a winter move, check for snow events the day before and the morning of, and have a driveway or private lot plan ready. Winter moves also mean salt, slush and ice on steps and walkways, so clear and salt the path from the door to the truck before the crew arrives.
There is no general moving-truck permit
Waterloo does offer a temporary on-street parking permit, but it is for residents whose driveway is blocked by construction or repairs not related to the City, not for moving. It needs at least three business days' notice, is picked up and paid for in person at the Waterloo Service Centre on Lexington Court, and may not be issued in winter because of snow clearing. For a move, the practical options are the driveway, legal on-street space within the time limits, or a building's loading area.
Condos and apartments
For uptown condos and apartment towers, the building's loading dock and moving rules matter more than the street:
- Book the elevator and loading area as early as possible, and confirm the time window in writing.
- Ask for the loading dock's clearance height, since some underground or covered docks will not fit a full-size moving truck.
- Ask whether the building requires a certificate of insurance from the mover, and give the mover the property manager's contact.
- If there is no dock, ask where the building expects trucks to stop, since uptown streets have signed restrictions and paid parking.
Houses and townhouses
For houses, the goal is the shortest carry. A few steps help:
- Move your own cars off the driveway the night before, onto the street legally or into a registered overnight spot.
- Tell neighbours on a tight street when the truck will arrive so their cars do not end up blocking it.
- In townhouse complexes, check the condominium corporation's rules on trucks in the laneways and visitor spots.
- In older neighbourhoods with narrow lots, ask whether a shared driveway will need to stay clear.
- In the villages to the north, like St. Jacobs and Elmira, check the local rules for the destination too.
The day-before parking checklist
- Check the City's website for a declared snow event, or a forecast that could bring one.
- Walk the street and note signed restrictions, hydrants and neighbours' driveways near your door.
- Move your own vehicles so the driveway is empty and clear of the boulevard edge.
- Register any car that must stay on the street overnight before 2:15 a.m.
- Confirm the elevator and loading dock booking at both addresses if either is an apartment or condo.
- Send the mover a photo of the driveway and the front entrance at each end.
Why parking changes the quote
